Delta Opened Sardinia’s First Direct U.S. Route
Delta launched the first nonstop air connection between the United States and Sardinia in May 2026. Before the route opened, Americans traveling to the island had to connect through mainland Italy or another European airport.
The inaugural flight left New York–JFK on May 20, 2026, at 6:10 p.m. and arrived in Olbia at 9:00 a.m. the following day. From June, the scheduled JFK departure moved to 6:30 p.m., while the arrival remained at 9:00 a.m.
The overnight schedule allows travelers to leave New York in the evening and arrive directly in northeastern Sardinia the next morning. Return flights from Olbia operate on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday during the 2026 season.

Americans Are Using the Delta Flight
The first passenger data show strong American demand for the route.
Between May and July 2026, Delta carried 7,837 passengers from JFK to Olbia. Of those, 7,091 were U.S. citizens—approximately nine out of every ten passengers traveling to Sardinia on the flight.
Across both directions, the route recorded 14,846 passenger movements from its launch through the end of July. U.S. citizens represented 91% of the total.

Delta Will Return to Sardinia in 2027
Delta’s JFK–Olbia route is already available for the 2027 season, with flights shown from May 28.
The airline will retain its four weekly departures from JFK on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Flight DL306 is scheduled to leave New York at 6:30 p.m. and arrive in Olbia at 9:00 a.m. the following day.
That morning arrival leaves travelers with much of their first day available after passport control, baggage collection and the transfer from Olbia Airport.
The return of the service in 2027 also means that Delta’s historic 2026 launch was not limited to a single season. American travelers can now include the direct route in their planning for both 2026 and 2027.
Why Delta Flies to Olbia
Sardinia has three principal commercial airports: Olbia, Cagliari and Alghero. Olbia is the only airport on the island served by nonstop flights from the United States and Sardinia’s only direct intercontinental gateway.
That distinction is important for first-time visitors. Delta does not land in Cagliari, in southern Sardinia, or Alghero, on the northwestern coast. It lands in Olbia, on the northeastern side of the island.
The geography is easier to understand in this order:
Sardinia is the island. Olbia is the arrival gateway. Gallura is the wider northeastern area. Costa Smeralda is its best-known international coastal destination.

Delta and United in 2027
Delta will be joined by United Airlines in 2027. United is scheduled to begin three weekly nonstop flights from Newark to Olbia on May 27.
The two airlines have scheduled departures on different days:

- United from Newark: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
During the period when both seasonal services are operating, the New York metropolitan area will have one nonstop departure to Olbia every day of the week.
