The main difference from September is variability.
October can deliver clear, warm days, but rain and wind become more important factors. Olbia, San Pantaleo, San Teodoro, La Maddalena, and Tempio have all appeared in the historical data for significant rain or wind events in different Octobers.
That makes October particularly well suited to travelers who are comfortable changing plans according to the weather.

According to WeatherSpark data analyzed by The Sardinia Guide, the average sea temperature around Olbia in October is about 70°F (21°C). The main warm-water season in Northeast Sardinia ends in late September, but the sea can still be comfortable for many swimmers.
The greater uncertainty is usually above the water: air temperature, wind, rain, and sea conditions.
A calm, sunny October day can still produce a very good beach day. A windy or rainy one can change the plan entirely.

What Is Actually Open in Sardinia in October?
This is the question that matters almost as much as the weather.
October is low season, and Sardinia does not operate exactly as it does in July or August. Some seasonal businesses close after September, some continue into the first half of October, and others remain active later in the month.
The result is not a closed island. It is an island in transition.
This is especially noticeable in Costa Smeralda. Several important luxury hotels remain available during at least part of October, while much of the summer beach-club and nightlife season has already wound down.

Luxury Hotels Still Open in October
Among the properties we found bookable on selected October 2026 dates are Hotel Cala di Volpe, Cervo Hotel, W Sardinia – Poltu Quatu, 7Pines Resort Sardinia, Baglioni Resort Sardinia, Cascioni Eco Retreat, and Su Gologone Experience Hotel in Oliena.
Availability varies significantly by hotel and by date.
Cala di Volpe and Cervo Hotel showed availability for October 18–24 when checked. W Sardinia also showed rooms for those dates. Baglioni Resort Sardinia showed availability during the first and middle part of October, with no availability shown from October 18 onward when checked.
Su Gologone’s official booking system includes stays through the end of October.
The practical lesson is simple: do not assume that a hotel is either open for the whole month or closed for the whole month. Check your exact dates.

Are Beach Clubs Open in October?
Some are, but the main summer beach-club season is largely over.
Several well-known venues close during September. That makes direct checking essential in October. Do not drive to a beach club assuming that summer opening hours still apply.

Boat Trips to Tavolara and La Maddalena
The end of summer does not mean the end of boating.
Selected excursions continue around Tavolara in October, although schedules are lighter and weather matters more. Tavolara Traghetti & Gite indicates an operating period extending to October 30.
Around La Maddalena, some excursion operators also continue into October, with individual seasons extending to mid-month or including October departures. Regular ferry connections between Palau and La Maddalena continue through the month.
This is where October benefits from flexibility. Fewer scheduled departures can make a private or tailor-made itinerary particularly useful.

Porto Pollo Is Still Active for Water Sports
October can also work well for travelers who want to use the sea rather than simply sit beside it.
At Porto Pollo, water-sports centers continue operating into fall. Sporting Club Sardinia indicates a season extending into early November, placing October firmly inside its operating period.
Activities include windsurfing, kitesurfing, wingfoil, sailing, SUP, and surfing, depending on conditions.
So while the beach-club season may be winding down elsewhere, Porto Pollo remains an active coastal destination.
Things to Do in Sardinia in October
This is where October becomes more interesting than simply “summer with fewer people.”
Once you stop planning the trip entirely around the beach, Sardinia offers archaeology, inland festivals, museums, literature, art, food, wine, and road trips.
Explore the Archaeological Sites of Arzachena
The archaeological park around Arzachena, close to Costa Smeralda, is one of the easiest ways to add a substantial cultural experience to a Northeast Sardinia trip.
Seven major sites publish daily October opening hours.
La Prisgiona, Coddu ’Ecchju, Nuraghe Albucciu, Tomba dei Giganti Moru, and the Tempietto di Malchittu are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.
Li Lolghi and Li Muri are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., also every day.
Advance booking is not normally required during regular opening hours. GE.SE.CO. also states that when a site is closed, visits may be possible by reservation.

Experience Autunno in Barbagia
While the coastal summer season slows down, inland Sardinia enters one of its most distinctive periods of the year.
Autunno in Barbagia runs from September 5 to December 13, with different villages hosting events on successive weekends.
In October 2026, the program includes Lula, Meana Sardo, Orotelli, and Sorgono on October 3–4; Gavoi, Lollove, Onanì, and Tonara on October 10–11; Belvì and Orgosolo on October 17–18; Aritzo, Olzai, and Ottana on October 24–25; and Desulo beginning October 31.
For travelers who know Sardinia mainly through Costa Smeralda and its beaches, this is a very different experience: villages, food, craftsmanship, traditions, and inland landscapes.

Visit Nuoro During the Grazia Deledda Centennial
The year 2026 marks the centenary of Grazia Deledda’s Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded in 1926.
That gives Nuoro particular significance this October.
The Casa Museo Grazia Deledda, housed in the writer’s birthplace, is open every day throughout October from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Its collections include manuscripts, photographs, documents, and personal objects connected with her life and work.
During the first days of the month, the museum also hosts Dal disegno alla casa. Gavino Clemente e lo Studio romano di Grazia Deledda, through October 4. The exhibition explores the design of Deledda’s Roman study and the continuing presence of Sardinian identity in the home she created after leaving the island.
Nuoro also hosts the 2026 edition of Voci di Maggio from October 1–4, dedicated this year to Grazia Deledda.
Two Unexpected New York Connections in Inland Sardinia

At the MAN museum, FUTURAMA. Nostalgia for the Future is open throughout October and explores how society has imagined the future over the past eight decades.

Olbia makes sense as a practical gateway if you want to move between different parts of Northeast Sardinia rather than organize the entire trip around one resort.
